The visitors won the toss and put the hosts in to bat. Hawkley started cautiously, losing Mullard and Kneller early on. Henry Batten’s good form continued and he played his usual attacking shots on his way to a rapid 27. After Batten departed Francis Usmar began to strike out, building an elegant innings supported by Hibberd (13) and Dunstan (12). Usmar was finally caught on the boundary for a superb 80 and thereafter the Hawkley tail folded without resistance, the last five batsmen adding only three runs. Tate and Rangaswarmy were the principal bowlers for IBM, taking three wickets apiece.

In reply IBM made a steady start in pursuit of their target of 159, content to score in singles as Hawkley bowlers Huntley and Dunstan bowling a tight line. The game came to life with a change of bowling as Hallam Brown claimed one of the openers, while Angus Hasloch lived up to his team-mates nickname “Lightning” to claim a run out. Wickets continued to fall but IBM’s Ross settled into a   match-winning innings, reaching his 50 just before the winning runs were scored, for the loss of 6 wickets.
