Hawkley took to the field first, bent on revenge after suffering several years of defeat at the hands of the Cavaliers. Skipper Keith Madeley gave the new ball to Chris Huntley and Nick Davies, who both bowled with accuracy, pace and aggression and soon had three batsmen back in the pavilion. Wickets continued to fall as the visitors lived up to their name, paying the price of trying too hard to attack the accurate and incisive bowling. At the end of the opening spell the Cavaliers were six wickets down for fifty, Davies accounting for four batsmen. Indeed Hawkley could have tightened the screws still further had they held more of the catches on offer. The Hawkley change bowlers were less successful and the stalwart Cavalier Derek Candy marshalled the tail well to close the innings on 149, which looked a par score on a pitch starting to show uneven bounce.
The fight against the Cavaliers came not from a Roundhead but from Chris Head, who formed a profitable partnership with Henry Batten after losing Madeley without score. Both batsmen progressed swiftly with a good range of strokes until Batten was bowled for thirty. The remaining Hawkley batsmen played supporting roles to Head, who continued his destructive and ultimately match winnings to finish undefeated on 89 as Hawkley ran down their target with eight overs in hand.
