Batting first, Purbrook’s opening batsmen attacked the Hawkley bowling from the off and looked set for a large total. The home side did not help their cause by spilling several chances, however Purbook rode their luck and raced to 60 before Bill Oversby held on to a juggling catch from the persevering Davis.   Soon afterwards Hallam Brown induced a simple chance to remove Lee for 46 and Hawkley were back in the game. The change bowlers put the brakes on the scoring rate and wickets fell at regular intervals and at tea Purbrook were all out for 174, Brown being the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 33.

The interval saw a presentation of flowers to Doris Knowles, whose teas have been enjoyed by countless cricketers over the past XX years.

In reply Hawkley soon lost Burkie and Dunstan followed by skipper Madeley. Francis Usmar and Henry Batten put up some spirited resistance to take the score past 60 however once they were out the middle order crumbled easily. Hawkley’s tail put up some fight but by this time the required run rate was rising alarmingly and the home side were all out for 124, 50 runs short of their target.
