Hawkley’s opponents in final game of the 2009 were the Broadhalfpenny Brigands. This was the first meeting between the two sides and indeed for the Brigands their only game of the season away from their home turf at Broadhalfpenny Down, the cradle of English cricket.
The Brigands won the toss and chose to bat, and opening pair Harris and Humphrey immediately set about building a big total. Hawkley bowled and fielded well but the batsmen played Hawkley’s opening bowlers with discipline and control, scoring quickly without offering a chance. Spinner Hallam Brown suffered some early mauling from the Brigands but persevered to get the crucial breakthrough when Harris was well taken on the long on boundary by Davis with the score already over 100. Burkie came on to bowl at the other end and the slow bowlers together slowed the scoring down as they settled into a long spell. Burkie in particular bowled a marathon 18 overs and took two valuable wickets for 84 runs. Hawkley’s hopes of restricting the Brigands to a total under 200 receded as the Brigands accelerated again near tea time, opening batsmen Humphrey completing his century to finish unbeaten on 120 as Brigands posted 238 for 5.
Hawkley’s reply began brightly as Batten and Head started quickly until Head was caught by Peach senior off his son’s bowling. Batten continued to bully the bowling as he raced to 50, supported by Mullard who hit an aggressive 28 and then Usmar who played with his customary elegance for a valuable 24. Batten meanwhile continued his assault on the bowlers, driving a straight six to record his second century of the summer. Hawkley by this time were well placed with 40 runs needed for victory with wickets and overs in hand, however after Burkie was bowled for a rapid 16 Hawkley started losing batsmen rapidly and their final wicket fell twenty runs short of victory.
Notwithstanding the result, this was a memorable end to a fine season for Hawkley.
