Hawkleys 2010 season continued with the annual visit from the Staggerers, an occasional side drawn from several local clubs.
Having lost the toss and been invited to bat, Hawkley confused the scorers by sending out two batsmen both named Nick Davis. Club chairman Nick Davis was swiftly off the mark with a boundary in the first over before falling to a good ball from Hannam however his namesake batted well in combination with Usmar and a good partnership developed until the second Davis fell with the score on fifty. Incoming batsmen Burkie gave a taste of what was to come by hitting his first ball for six and the score advanced rapidly until Usmar was stumped for 31. The arrival of the left-handed Dinnis was a signal for the real carnage to start: Burkie’s hard hitting complementing the languid elegance of Dinnis as the pair put on 150 runs in a very short time. The pair accelerated as Burkie neared his century which he reached with a boundary after which he retired. Dinnis was bowled shortly afterwards for 65 and the Hawkley innings closed on 267.
The Staggerers reply started strongly until Davis 2 bowled Turner. Mullard bowling from the other end took an excellent catch off his own bowling to dismiss Hannam before dismissing Holman second ball. The Staggerers regrouped as Wren joined Webber and a good stand developed until Burkie came on to bowl and immediately removed Webber for an excellent fifty and Mears for a duck. Thereafter the Staggerers concentrated on survival and the scoring rate slowed as wickets fell regularly until the Staggerers ran out of overs on 196 for 8 with Wren undefeated on 55.
This was an excellent game with good individual performances on both sides capped by Burkie’s century.
