Sunday saw a strong Hawkley XI play Grayswood CC in a new fixture which pitched Hawkley’s experience against a youthful but well-drilled opposition.
Grayswood batted first and were quickly off the mark. A couple of difficult chances were spilled before Mullard broke through for Hawkley by bowling McAllister. Thereafter Grayswood stepped up the pace, the batsmen striking the ball very cleanly as they built a big stand for the second wicket which was finally ended when Burkie removed Nash for 40. The Hawkley change bowlers came in for some rough treatment by Grayswood as the Green duo latched on to any loose balls until finally Todd induced a catch to remove A Green for 58. Hawkley generally fielded well, Mark Marvin in particular produced an athletic display on the midwicket boundary in his last Sunday appearance before joining his regiment in Afghanistan. Gloak continued the punishment until neatly stumped by Hibberd off the bowling of Brown and thereafter the Grayswood innings finished with a whimper rather than a bang as Todd picked up three more quick wickets.
Hawkley’s target of 241 looked challenging but not impossible with some in-form batsmen in their line-up. Skipper Keith Madeley opened the batting with Hallam Brown and they built a solid foundation to the innings with a fifty partnership. Brown and Marvin were dismissed in quick succession to bring past captain Richard Humphreys to the crease which signalled a change of gear for Hawkley as Humphreys hammered a succession of fours and sixes to bring Hawkley on track to reach their target. After Madeley fell for a hard-earned 37 Burkie and Head both gave valuable support to Humpheys who continued his onslaught until finally dismissed for 74 to bring the hard-hitting Todd to face the last few overs with the scoring rate rising above ten an over. Despite some powerful shots from the big man and a last-over flourish from Hibberd, Hawkley finished 13 short of their target leaving Grayswood the victors in what had been a hard-fought but good-humoured game.
