In an old fixture re-established after fifteen years, Cheriton batted first clearly intent on taking full advantage of ideal batting conditions. Hawkley struck early as Noble edged Davis to gulley where Hallam Brown parried the ball for Usmar to catch. A big stand then ensued as Bishop and Bolshaw plundered the Hawkley attack, until change bowler Todd struck twice in his first over. This bought Burkie to the middle, a Hawkley player loaned for the game to his old side, and he launched into the Hawkley bowling, scoring almost at will off every ball. Spinner Hallam Brown took some punishment before finally getting his man when Burkie skied to midwicket for 85, while from the other end Hudson had Bishop caught by Madeley for an excellent 89. This enabled the bowlers to exert a degree of control over Cheriton who finished on 276 for 8 after their mid-innings onslaught seemed likely to carry them over three hundred.
With a strong batting line-up and the wicket playing as well as ever, Hawkley began their chase in confidant style. Toby Flack and skipper Keith Madeley took the score past fifty in a very short time before Madeley fell to the bowling of Craddock, and at the mid-point of Hawkley’s innings they were only slightly behind the run-rate but with plenty of batting to come. Cheriton rotated their bowlers skilfully and the Hawkley innings stuttered as their normally prolific middle-order all departed cheaply. Flack finally perished on 93 having carried the Hawkley innings almost singled handed. Brown struck a defiant six into the car park however the rest of the Hawkley innings subsided quietly as they closed on 195 for nine, some eighty runs short of their target.
Both sides played in excellent spirit and this long-lost fixture which is now set to become a regular annual contest.
