Hawkley played their annual game against the Evans XI, a guest team of past and present Hawkley players lead by Viv Evans, who provided his usual generous post-game barbecue for players, spectators and their families.
Viv Evans won the toss and chose to bat on a pitch which despite the recent rain looked in very good shape. The Evans XI suffered an early loss when Nick Todd yorked opening batsmen Toby Flack off the first ball of the innings. Barry Allison and Reubens Maltby rebuilt the innings and the score mounted steadily until a double bowling change produced immediate result when Dunstan bowled Allison and Oversby had Maltby well caught by Hibberd behind the stumps. David Jays and captain Viv Evans both scored freely until Hallam Brown took an excellent slip catch to dismiss Evans to bring his father Nigel Brown to the crease. Both batsmen found the conditions ideal for batting and a big score looked in prospect, helped by wayward bowling from some of the Hawkley bowlers. Both batsmen passed fifty before Brown was eventually bowled in Todd’s second spell for 56 and Jays was undefeated at the close on 67, with the Evans team total 203.
Hawkley in reply lost Kneller early on, however Sam Mullard and Hallam Brown looked very comfortable and the score mounted rapidly. Mullard had to leave the field with a wrenched knee after scoring 30 runs, however the momentum never faltered as Nick Todd played his customary lavish strokes. Hallam Brown was eventually out for an excellent 66, caught and bowled by Viv Evans young son Seamus, at which point Mullard was sufficiently recovered to resume his innings. Both batsmen has passed fifty by the time Todd fell, again to Evans junior, and Hawkley were now only a few runs away from their target. With only four runs needed and eight wickets left, Mullard swept Evans junior for what looked like a winning six, only to find the safe hands of Evans senior on the midwicket boundary. Mullard was clapped into the pavilion as his team mates waited for the winning runs and the barbecue to begin. Unfortunately, the Evans team had other ideas... Toby Flack, eager to avenge his first ball dismissal, inflicted a similar fate on Peter Lilly, and Ray Dunstan was left marooned in the middle of the wicket to be run out, again without scoring. Youngster Tom Kealy was bowled, again by Flack and again without troubling the scorer and the Hawkley team looked to the experienced Mark Hibberd to see them home, only to see instead a good slip catch by Kinge. Oversby was a picture of coolness under fire as he presented Flack with a simple return catch and Hawkley were suddenly nine wickets down: skipper Hudson was unable to get a run off the last ball of Flack’s over and could only watch as the fielders gathered around McLean’s bat like hungry vultures. McLean defended the first two balls well, but was then snapped up by Maltby at short leg – Hawkley had lost eight wickets without scoring a run, and the Evans XI had scored a famous victory.
