 Match Report

Hawkley (164 all out) lost to Selborne (165 for 4 ) by 6 wickets

Played at Hawkley on Sunday 15th July 2018

Hawkley batted first and the opening batsmen we immediately in trouble against the pace of Selborne's Arundell.  After two quick wickets fell Aaron Stewart fought back with cleanly-hit pulls and drives, until he holed out to mid-on for 16. Paul Cross and Liam Lloyd took up the baton, picking the balls to punish until they too fell for 15 and 16 respectively. Viv Evans and Sam Cunningham came together with the score on 62 and added a valuable forty runs before Evans was bowled for 31. Cunningham kept the momentum going with a rapid 27, taking the score to 135.  Hawkley tail-enders added useful runs as their innings closed on 164 in the penultimate over before the  break.

Selborne’s reply began cautiously in the face of accurate bowling from Hawkley.  Liam Lloyd picked up a wicket in his first over when Viv Evans took a sharp low slip catch and after twelve overs Selborne had scored 25 runs, well behind the asking rate.  A change of bowling bought an immediate wicket as Viv Evans won an LBW decision in his first over, and picked up another victim two overs later while at the other end Aaron Stewart added a fourth wicket when Sam Cunningham took a good catch at mid-wicket.  Selborne meanwhile had upped their scoring rate and after 24 overs the score stood at 106 for 4, however with 59 runs required off the remaining six overs the batsmen required a challenging ten runs an over to stay in the chase.  Selborne’s batsmen Pink and Lloyd were now scoring freely and their target got closer by the over.  Ed Peel took the ball for the last over with four runs required to win from:  after three singles and two dot balls the score was level when Pink faced the last ball with the fielders crowded round the bat.  The batsman calmly cut the last ball for four to hand Selborne victory in a hard-fought match:  Pink ending on 54 and Lloyd on 74.
